We are currently seeking a qualified Senior Manager of Property Accounting for our Chicago - Home Office. ELS is looking for a Senior Manager of Property Accounting to support and oversee a team of accountants working on the financial statements close process within a portfolio of properties. This role will also have a large impact on process improvement and implementation within the department. There will be significant interaction with operations, including property managers, budgeting, and forecasting. A successful candidate will be a hands-on professional with a strong understanding of the application of GAAP.  A control and process-oriented mindset, strong analytical and problem solving skills, and desire and ability to identify, recommend and lead improvements are vital to be successful in this role. This position offers high visibility to the C-Suite and potential to grow within ELS.

Job Duties include: 

  • Oversee the timely completion of the monthly accounting close for a portfolio of properties
  • Responsible for the review and accuracy of the monthly financial statements for a portfolio of properties
  • Prepare monthly income statement analysis comparing actual to budget/forecast and prior year, including robust explanations for variances and present results to management
  • Review balance sheet account reconciliations, including complex cash accounts
  • Prepare quarterly/annual schedules to support financial statements used for public reportin
  • Provide assistance to external auditors during quarterly review and annual audit process
  • Manage day-to- day activities of Senior and Staff Accountants to ensure all assigned activities are completed timely and accurately
  • Proposes recommendations for changes and improvements to accounting policies/procedures
  • Continually evaluate system processes across the organization and lead projects to streamline and improve monthly close process, including software implementation/software integration projects
  • Ensure support to key customers, including operations and FP&A as needed

Requirements include: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, CPA preferred
  • Minimum eight years of accounting experience; real estate or property accounting experience a plus
  • Strong working knowledge of US GAAP
  • Project management experience with focus on software implementation and software integration projects
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines
  • Detail oriented and excellent organization skills: accuracy is essential
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Experience with Microsoft suite of products
